Tom went to several schools in the areas around Houston, Texas and Northampton, England. He earned his BSEE from the University of Texas at Austin in 2002 and finished his M.S. in Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005. He is currently a full-time member of the Google engineering staff.

His research focused on distributed coordination methods.
